The software-defined vehicle (SDV) and AI cars market is set to be worth over US$700 billion by 2034, representing around 20% of the global car market, according to IDTechEx’s report ‘Software-Defined Vehicles, Connected Cars and AI in Cars 2024-2034. That sum can be sourced from several areas, such as monthly connectivity subscriptions, commission from in-vehicle payments, and one-time software upgrades. Thanks to improvements in-car connectivity, onboard hardware capabilities, and a global shift in consumer preferences toward subscription models, the software-defined vehicle market is set to grow at compound annual rate of 34% between 2023 and 2034

Nissan and Honda on Friday disclosed that they’re considering a “strategic partnership in the fields of vehicle electrification and intelligence.” As of yet, the companies have only committed to a feasibility study for the idea, but such a partnership would aim to combine strengths and accelerate carbon-neutrality and safety efforts for both companies. The initial study will include “automotive software platforms, core components related to EVs, and complementary products,” according to a release on what at this point remains a memorandum of understanding.

It’s probably no secret by now that I am a fan of tiny electric conveyances such as enclosed quadricycles, tricycles, and the like, even though I think we’ve got a long way to go (esp. in the US) until mass adoption, from mainstreaming their presence on streets and roads to building out more of the public charging infrastructure to including more dedicated parking options. However, issues like those have been the case with full-sized EVs since the get-go, but that hasn’t seemed to slow down their adoption rates any, and so here I am with yet another fun-sized horseless carriage.

Experian's fourth quarter 2023 Automotive Market Trends report, released Thursday, noted that 9.4% of new vehicles purchased by Gen X in 2023 were electric. Gen X purchased the most new vehicles of any generation over the year, as well as the most EVs in total. Millennials aren't far behind by total EV sales tally, and for them EVs are an even higher 10.2% of new vehicles purchased. Meanwhile, EVs only account for 5.9% of new vehicles purchased by Boomers in 2023, and 6.6% of those purchased by "digitally native" Gen Z, according to the report.
